We parked at Whinlatter forest park and started this walk by wandering through the play areas and trails designed for children. We were impressed by the forestry’s efforts to excite the imagination of the younger generation, especially the Gruffalo hunting and the water coursing!
As our route wound up through the Forestry England’s roads, we eventually reached a gate to, seemingly, nowhere! Just a rocky steep slope lay beyond. It wasn’t until we decided to go completely through the gate and look up, did we find the path. Following the fence that the gate was attached to, a steep, but short stepped path took us to the top.
From there, we turned left and followed a beautiful heathery hill walk all the way along to the top of Whinlatter, there were a few bogs to negotiate but they weren’t bad considering the time of year. Most likely non-existent in the summer months. Once reaching the summit, we made our way back to the edge of the forest and followed a path on the outer side of the fence until we got to a style to enter the woodland and onto a forest road. The road then lead us all the way back down.
