Starting from our B&B in Grasmere, we walked along Red Bank road and took a right onto a footpath (before you reach Faeryland Grasmere rowing boat hire). This foot path took us up Silver How, the scenic way. There were stunning views of Grasmere water as we carried on though the waterfall walkways, a footpath crossroads of sorts. Turning right here would lead you on a much steeper path to the top, but we went straight on past this. Traversing some easy streams and eventually turning right to follow a more gradual climb to the summit.
The top of Silver How has amazing 360 views. From one side you have Grasmere itself with the water and mountains beyond, the other side has rolling moorland, again leading to mountains in the distance. You get the feel of both being at the high point of the area, yet also being encased in a safety net of surrounding mountains. This has to be one of my most favorite viewpoints in the Lake District.
We decided to head off on a trail into the mountains from Silver How. Looping around Lang How, there are a couple of little tarns and a larger, more impressive one. Being sheltered from the wind, it was very calm and serene here. The route from Lang How back to Grasmere is quite spongy and mossy underfoot at first, the path wasn’t much more than a compass bearing at first. But as you slowly descend, it becomes bushy and bracken and the trail gets more obvious as you walk around the foot of Kell Crag and back into Grasmere.
