The Best Ethical Outdoor Gear

The impact of the gear that we use and abuse when out walking, on high mountains or sandy beaches is more important than ever. To this end we have dedicated part of out Review site to point out the best in class Ethical Outdoor Gear that we have found and used.

Every review on this page has been worn on a number long mountain days to ensure that the quality of these items is nothing but the best. Additionally, any item listed below is created by a company who are on the cutting edge of ethical outdoor gear, or currently in the process of pivoting their business model. They must have the health of both the planet and their workers at the heart of their business.

Waterproof Jacket - Páramo Alta III

A High end performance waterproof trusted by mountain experts and mountain rescue. This Analogy jacket pushes boundaries with breathability and comfort while keeping you warm and dry, See how it holds up.

Baselayer - Montane Dart

For years this has been my go-to performance base layer. It’s a great price, incredibly comfortable and works well in all conditions. It’s now made with fully recycled materials so why not check out the full review to see why it’s such a good baselayer.

Fleece or softshell - Páramo Ostro/Alize Fleece

The flexibility of separates, with the combined ability of a full Analogy jacket? Check out here just how well the Ostro Combo works both as standalone jackets as well as together as a combination.

Backpack - Osprey Stratos 26L

This backpack is not on the list because it’s the most ethically made, or because its materials stand up better than others. It’s on the list because Osprey has committed to becoming “the most progressive, Transparent and Sustainable hard goods brand worldwide” and are backing this up with some fantastic policies around recycled materials and ensuring goods don’t go to landfill.

In addition to their great recent work, this bag is half a decade old at this point and looks as good as day 1, it has had no faults no significant signs of wear and like all equipment we buy, I’m expecting this to last a good while longer yet.
